Why Training Your Newly Adopted Dog Is So Important

Bringing home a rescue dog is an exciting and rewarding experience. Many of the dogs at Golden Retriever Freedom Rescue have never lived in a home before. They may have spent their lives in breeding facilities, shelters, or other environments where they were never taught basic household manners or exposed to everyday experiences.

Training isn't just about teaching commands—it's about building trust, confidence, communication, and a lifelong bond between you and your dog.

Every Dog Can Benefit from Training

A well-behaved, confident dog is a happy dog. While puppies and adolescent dogs (up to about three years old) typically require the most training, adult dogs benefit just as much as they adjust to their new home, family, and routine.

Training helps your dog:

  • Build confidence in unfamiliar situations.
  • Learn household routines and expectations.
  • Develop good manners around people and other animals.
  • Strengthen the bond with their new family.
  • Improve safety through reliable cues such as "come," "leave it," and "stay."
  • Reduce stress and anxiety by providing consistency and structure.
  • Learn how to navigate the world with confidence.

Many rescue dogs are experiencing everyday things for the very first time—walking on hardwood floors, hearing a vacuum cleaner, riding in a car, climbing stairs, or simply sleeping in a warm bed. Patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement help them understand that these new experiences are safe.

Training Is a Lifelong Journey

Training doesn't end after puppyhood. Dogs continue learning throughout their lives, and regular training sessions provide valuable mental enrichment while reinforcing good behaviors.

Keep training sessions short, positive, and fun. Celebrate small successes and remember that every dog learns at their own pace.

Choosing the Right Trainer Matters

Dog training is an unregulated industry, which means anyone can call themselves a dog trainer regardless of their education or experience. We encourage adopters to do their research before selecting a trainer.

Look for trainers who:

  • Use positive reinforcement and reward-based methods.
  • Explain why they use specific techniques.
  • Encourage you to participate in training sessions.
  • Respect your dog's emotional well-being.
  • Focus on building trust rather than using fear or intimidation.

Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, don't hesitate to leave and find another trainer.

Our Training Philosophy

Golden Retriever Freedom Rescue believes dogs learn best through kindness, patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. We do not support training methods that rely on fear, pain, intimidation, or physical corrections.

We do not recommend the use of:

  • Prong collars
  • Shock or electronic collars
  • Choke collars
  • Physical punishment
  • Kneeing a dog in the chest
  • Rubbing a dog's nose in urine or feces
  • Pinching a dog's ears or genitalia
  • Any form of physical abuse or intimidation

These techniques can damage the trust your rescue dog is just beginning to build and may increase fear, anxiety, or unwanted behaviors.

Give Your Dog Time

Remember the 3-3-3 Rule:

  • First 3 days: Your dog is decompressing and adjusting to a completely new environment.
  • First 3 weeks: They begin learning your routine and feeling more comfortable.
  • First 3 months: They start building trust, confidence, and truly feeling at home.

Your patience during this transition will lay the foundation for a lifetime of success.

With love, consistency, and positive training, your newly adopted dog will gain confidence, strengthen your bond, and become the wonderful companion they were always meant to be.
