Adoption Application Instructions
Thank you for your interest in adopting or fostering a Golden Retriever or mixed breed through GRFR. Here is everything you need to know before applying.
Important information
We are grateful for your interest in adopting a rescue dog. Before filling out an application, please review the following important details.
One application covers all dogs
You do not need to fill out an application for each dog. For the question "Which animals are you interested in?" you can simply answer "Dog". There is no need to name a particular dog.
Colorado residents only
We do not adopt outside the state of Colorado. All applicants must live in Colorado.
Answer every question
Please answer every question completely. Incomplete applications cannot be processed.
Fencing and housing guidelines
Goldens and Golden mixes are social, active dogs that need a safe place to exercise. Our fencing and housing requirements exist to protect the dogs we place.
- A secure, physical fenced yard is required. Invisible (electric or shock) fences are not an acceptable substitute, and we do not place dogs in homes with invisible fencing.
- A fence at least 5 feet tall is preferred for most dogs. Applicants with fencing under 5 feet may experience longer wait times, as placement depends on the individual dog's size, activity level, and ability to be safely contained.
- Senior dogs (8 years and older) may be considered for adoption to homes without a private, securely fenced yard, depending on the individual dog's needs, temperament, and activity level.
The adoption process
- 1
Submit your application
Complete the adoption application after reviewing these instructions and our FAQ. Please answer every question; incomplete applications cannot be processed.
- 2
Phone interview
If you meet our adoption requirements, a GRFR volunteer will contact you for a short phone interview about your family, home, lifestyle, and expectations.
- 3
Home visit
A volunteer visits your home to make sure it is a safe environment for a dog. ALL household members and resident dogs and pets MUST be present.
- 4
Approval and matching
The committee reviews everything. Matching typically takes [CONFIRM: 2 weeks to 4+ months (old draft page) or 1 week to 2+ months (team doc FAQ)].
- 5
Meet your golden
When a foster volunteer believes a dog may be a good fit, they will contact you to arrange a meet-and-greet. Your entire family and pets must attend. If you receive a voicemail or text from a foster, you must respond within 24 hours, or the foster home will move on to the next approved applicant.
What to expect
Placements are not first-come
Placements are based on what is best for the dog and which adopter is the best match.
Be flexible
The more flexible you are about age and type, the faster the process may go.
Families with children welcome
Not all dogs suit homes with kids or cats, so finding the right match is key for safety and harmony.
All dogs need training
Every rescue dog requires some training. Be prepared to invest time building a bond.
